Rustproofing; about us, what we do and why you should have your car rustproofed Any devotee of classic cars who has spent cold winter nights in a cramped lock up with an old car, a welder and an angle grinder for company will know of the importance of rust prevention. Corrosion is probably the biggest threat to a vehicle’s appearance and value in this country, long damp winters with salt covered roads can ruin even the most cherished vehicle in just a few years if not properly protected. One must also consider the safety implications of a rusting vehicle. Modern unitary monocoque design relies on the complete integrity of the vehicles body frame- remove some of the critical strength around the sills and chassis members for example through corrosion and a bodyshell’s inbuilt strength is lost, often with catastrophic results. Saving the planet? There is also now a strong environmental argument for keeping your car rust free for longer. Your car may not be the most efficient planet saving model out there, but recent studies have shown that 90% of a car’s impact on the environment is during it’s manufacture- all that steel, plastic, glass, trim, wiring and foam that goes into car production leaves a terrifying carbon footprint! We all know that recycling is the way forward when it comes to every other aspects of life- why should the motor car be any different? Unfortunately environmental pressure’s are also forcing manufacturers to cut the amount of underbody and cavity protection on the cars they make. The water based paints that have been universally adopted are also less robust than the acrylic products that have been in use for years. It is also in their interests for you to throw in the towel and buy a nice new car from them every 5 years when the bills start to mount up too! The times they are a changin’ Many of you are, I’m sure, aware of the general state of the economy at the moment. This is having a dramatic effect on the new car industry. Not a week passes without the news that another great motor manufacturer is in trouble. The reality is that we are having to change our spending habits. The days of popping down to the dealers and signing up for a nice new car every 2-3 years are coming to an end- for the foreseeable future anyway. We are going to have to look after the cars we have and try and keep them going for longer. Second hand car prices are also dropping fast, so from a financial point of view, hanging on to the car that has served you well over the last few years might just be a very good idea indeed! . Regular maintenance is going to become much more important, cars are going to be seen as less of a disposable item and anything that will prolong that vehicles life, cut down on costly repairs, and end the horror stories come MOT time has got to make sound financial sense. This is where rustproofing your vehicle might just save you a small fortune. Rustproofing is no longer something just for those old classic cars- modern cars rust just as well- just ask the owner of a 5 or 6 year old Mercedes E class, a Land Rover Discovery or your friendly local MOT tester! What can I do about it? There are a number of ways to protect your vehicle from corrosion and cavity wax injection is by far the most cost effective method. Our process involves spraying a thick waxy solution, full of corrosion inhibitors that lock onto your vehicles metalwork into all internal box sections, inside panels, onto suspension and onto under body surfaces to form a flexible, self healing barrier against moisture. This is no new ‘wonder product’, Waxoyl has been around for many years and as a result there are many older vehicles that have survived without major restoration. The most important thing is correct application, and that’s where we come in!
